How Does Cliti Work?

The first thing that we had to do was to configure our e-mail accounts and settings. With the help of the Internet, setting up a new e-mail account and sending a SASE to Cliti was a piece of cake. All we needed to do was to enter the IP address of our server in the appropriate field and sent it by the way of e-mail. We could also send SASE to other locations by entering their IP addresses in the corresponding fields. Once done, we just had to wait for the e-mails to be delivered by Cliti’s server.

But the problem was, that by merely sending SASE to Cliti, it doesn’t mean we have given them our e-mail address in the first place. Since we didn’t actually give them our private details when we set up our accounts, what we actually did was to make a security mistake. As a result, we were not able to retrieve any of our old personal data. So, even though we have sent SASE, we cannot really do anything with it anymore. This is a big problem since it means that we need to get a new email account.

So now that we have an IP address and the privacy issue, let us move on to the technical information. Since our e-mail service provider has changed the way of doing things, it means that the way in which we are protected from having our personal data sold to others is no longer applicable. If we have registered ourselves with a free e-mail service, we can still ask our IP address through an anonymous proxy service to send us a SASE. If this doesn’t work, we can always go for the paid ones. But what happens if our IP address is registered with a site that simply does not have an account with any of the email services?

In such cases, we will have to get another IP address from the site and then use the proxy server again to access the site. Since the cookies enabled in the anonymous proxy service will be different from our normal cookies, the site cannot guarantee that we can access the site using the same IP address. This is why we have to rely on the JavaScript code that redirects us from the free site to the paid site. Since JavaScript code cannot be blocked by cookies, we have to make sure that the JavaScript code is enabled whenever cookies are enabled.

So how does Cliti work? It is a browser add-on that uses two methods for persistence: one is for persistent cookies and the other is for local storage. Persistent cookies are stored in the local storage of your browser, the kind of thing that you see when you are browsing the Internet. The interesting thing about persistent cookies is that they are actually attached to our IP address and so can be traced back to us. The question then becomes how does Cliti use local storage and JavaScript code in a way that it is not traceable back to us?

Cliti session based cookies are implemented through JavaScript code that is loaded from a third party web site. When you visit a particular site, the JavaScript code is executed and this will be shown on the screen. Once this is displayed, the Cliti client will request for the session cookies. When you accept the offer, the code will be stored into your browser’s cache and will be ready for the subsequent session. The Cliti JavaScript then will execute and it will be possible to browse the site without even having to type in our IP address. This method has the added advantage that it can also prevent bots from crawling the site and automatically be traced back to us.
